About Derek


Derek was borned on May 4th, 1983 in Ottawa. He started to skate when he was 4 in Vanier, Ontario. As a 6 years old, he started to play minor hockey with Cumberland before moving to Clarence Creek at age 8 where he played for the Clarence novice 'B' team. As a bantam, he played AA hockey for 2 season with the Eastern Ontario Cobras where he lead the Cobras to the league championship.

In 1999, Derek was drafted by the Kichener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he led the Rangers with 87 points during the 1999-00 season, and won the OHL Rookie of the Year trophy. The next season, he scored 42 goals and 81 points and was drafted 32nd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The next season Derek set OHL career highs in goals and points and continued to be the Rangers leading scorer.

During the 2002-03 season, Derek's last in the OHL, he was selected to play for Team Canada in the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships, and brought home a silver medal and received player of the game honnor. In this same season, the Kitchener Rangers won the Memorial Cup and Derek won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as Memorial Cup MVP.

Derek with the Buffalo Sabres
In 2003, Derek moved on to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL) where he played 26 games and was called-up by the Buffalo Sabres where he played 49 games. Derek was back with the Americans for the 2004-05 season because of the NHL lockout. In 2005-06, he scored 20 points in 8 games with the Americans (including a few 5-point performances) and was quickly called up by the Sabres where he played for the balance of the season.

On Friday, March 3rd, 2006, Derek recorded his first NHL hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
