Coach credits team effort for victory

February 4, 2008

Maxim Choquette started and ended the game the same way – by scoring unlikely goals.  Right off the opening face-off the Cobras captain swooped in on Kanata goalie David Ure to give Eastern Ontario a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.  The lead only lasted for nine seconds, as Kanata raced down the ice on the ensuing faceoff and surprised Cobras goalie Tanya Winchcombe to tie up the game at 1-1.

From that point in, it was a see-saw game, with the lead changing hands several times.  After two periods the Cobras were up 4-3 thanks to a goal by Gabriel Demers right at the buzzer, but Kanata tied it up again early in the third.  That’s when the Cobras took over, with third period markers from Mathieu Galipeau, and the insurance tally by Choquette.  “He took a shot while he was down on the ice and he scored a top corner goal,” marvelled coach Mario Galipeau after the game.

The Cobras got production right through the line-up, with eight different players scoring at least one point.  Choquette had two goals, while Daniel Markovic and Jacob Marley each picked up a goal and an assist.  Adam Cooke had two assists.  Gabriel Demers scored the winning goal midway through the third, setting the stage for Markovic’s dramatic insurance marker.

“It was a real team effort,” said Galipeau.  “We never gave up, we went hard to the net and picked up some garbage goals.”   Every little bit helps!
