Midget Minors gear up for playoffs The Minor Midgets stayed close for two periods against the Ottawa Sting in their last regular season game, but in the end, their lack of scoring punch did them in as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Sting. The Sting used their power play to get on the board in the first period, then doubled their lead to 2-0 with another goal with the man advantage in the second. It could have been worse as goalie Benoit Gagnon stopped a penalty shot and repeatedly made big saves to keep the game close. The Cobras closed to within one with Cross’ third period tally. Carl Desjardins and Martin Maloney drew assists on the goal, which re-energized the Cobras. They had several good chances on a power play late in the game, but couldn’t find the range. The Sting clinched the win with an empty net goal. The Minor Midgets ended the season at 6-23-1, good for eighth place and a date with the first place Kanata Blazers in the opening round of the playoffs. |
Four other teams advance Four other Cobras teams will also participate in the playoffs. Mario Galipeau’s Minor PW A team finished in 6th place with a record of 11-12-7, and will play the Silver Seven White. Dennis Sweeney’s Major Bantam AA team faces off against the Gloucester Rangers after finishing the regular season in fifth place with a record of 12-14-4. The Major Midgets, under the direction of coach Guy Girouard, ended the season at .500 (13-13-4) and will also advance. Their first round opponent will be determined once regular season plays ends on Feb 14. The Atom B Cobras, led by Al Crnjac, have one more regular season game remaining, but have clinched sixth place with a record of 10-15-4.
